How the matching engine actually works

No black box, no mystery algorithm — here's exactly what happens between the moment you click "Start" and the moment you see your top 3.

Step 1 — Five questions, chosen on purpose

Every question in the Finder maps to something that genuinely changes which car makes sense for you: your budget range, the body style you need, your fuel preference, how many seats you need, and the one factor you care about most (fuel economy, reliability, comfort, family space, or value). We kept it to five because most people can answer that many honestly in under a minute — more questions usually means more abandoned quizzes, not better matches.

Step 2 — Scoring against a vehicle dataset

Behind the scenes, MuxDrive holds a dataset of vehicle profiles covering common sedans, SUVs, hatchbacks, and pickups across petrol, hybrid, diesel, and electric options. Each profile is tagged with a budget tier, body type, fuel type, seat count, and a primary strength. When you finish the quiz, every profile is scored against your five answers using a simple point system — an exact match on budget or body type earns more points than a partial match, and so on.

Step 3 — Ranking and presenting your top 3

The three highest-scoring profiles are shown to you, each with a plain-language reason pulled from that vehicle's strengths. We show three rather than one because car buying is rarely a single "right" answer — three gives you a real shortlist to start researching, comparing, and test driving.

Everything above runs in your browser. Nothing you enter into the Finder is sent to a server or stored — see our Privacy Policy for the full detail.

What the Finder is good at

  • Narrowing a huge, overwhelming market down to a short, sensible list.
  • Surfacing options you might not have considered based on how you described your needs.
  • Giving you a starting vocabulary — body type, fuel type, priority — to use when you talk to a dealer.

What it's not — and where to double-check

The Finder isn't a substitute for hands-on research. It doesn't know current local pricing, real-time inventory, or the condition of a specific used vehicle. Treat your matches as a shortlist, then verify current specs and pricing with the manufacturer or dealer, read recent owner reviews, and always test drive before buying. For a used vehicle, an independent mechanical inspection is worth the cost every time.
